OF ORIGINAL
text of The Book of Revelation reveals that the number is 616, see line
three (chi, iota, sigma) Other texts use 666, which one is correct? The
confusion over the correct number is nothing when compared to the insanity
of the various interpretations.
Repeat the number 666 and you conjure up
the Anti-Christ. And just what is this Anti-Christ, whose name is only a
number?
The Omen, and
its imitators, which quoted non-existent scripture and misquoted others,
was a popular novel and then a movie that dealt with a fictional battle
that was supposed to take place between two eternal powers.
The film did much to interest and
confuse the public about the Anti-Christ, 666. But similar confusion has
been around for centuries. In just the last 200
years the Anti-Christ
has been identified as the Pope, King George III, Napoleon, Abraham
Lincoln, Kaiser Wilhelin, the International Zionist Movement,Aliester
Crowley, Adolf
Hitler, the Communist Party, John F. Kennedy, Heniy Kissinger, Ayatollah
Khomeini, and lately, the little vertical marks that label all our
grocery products,
What is this Anti-Christ/666 business
all about?
The Anti-Christ is a being mentioned in
the New Testament, and only there. The radical Christian fundamentalists
believe that the Anti-Christ is a world leader who will come shortly
before the Second Coming of Jesus, and who will deceive the whole world
and attempt to form a single world-wide government that will be
non-Christian.
The following are all the Bible verses
that are generally accepted as referring to the Anti-Christ:
Then, if anyone says to you, ‘Look,
here is the Messiah’, or, There he is’, do not believe it. Impostors
will come claiming to be messiahs or prophets, and they will produce
great signs and wonders to mislead even God’s chosen people, if such a
thing be possible.’ -Matthew
24:23-24
And / beheld another beast coming up
out of the Earth, and he had two horns like a lamb, but he spoke like a
dragon. And he exercised a/I the authority of the first beast in his
sight, and caused the world and its inhabitants to worship the first
beast, whose deadly wound had been healed. And he. ..deceived
the inhabitants of the world by wonders which he was able to do in the
presence of the beast, telling the inhabitants of the world that they
should make a statue of the beast, which had a wound by the sword and
yet lived. And he was able to give breath unto the statue of the beast,
that the statue of the beast could both speak and cause a/I who would
not worship the statue should be put to death. And he made a/I, both
small and. great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in
their right hand, or upon their foreheads, and no one was allowed to buy
or sell unless he had that mark, either the name of the beast or the
number of his name. Here is the key. Let anyone who has wisdom figure
the number of the beast, for it is the name of a man, and the number Is
666. - Revelation
13.-II-18
The beast that you saw
was once alive, and is alive no more, but shall ascend out of the
bottomless pit, and into perdition. And they that dwell on Earth, whose
names wore not written in the Book of Life since the beginning of this
age, shall wonder when they behold the boast, who was once alive, and is
alive no more, and yet still is. -Revelation 1 7:8
Let no man deceive
you by any means, for that day (of rapture) shall not come until there
come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed - the
son of perdition who opposes and exalts himself above a/I that is called
God, or every object of man’s worship. He even takes his seat in the
temple of God, claiming to be a god himself Do you not remember that /
told you this while / was still with you, and know you now whose
restraining hand ensures that he shall be revealed only at the proper
time. For the mystery of that wickedness does already operate. Only the
restrainer intervenes for a time, until he is removed. And than shall
the wicked man become manifest whom the Lord shall consume with the
spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his

Who is the liar? Who
but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is an Anti-Christ, for he
denies both the Father and the Son. - 1
John 2:2 2
My children, this is the
last hour. You were told that the Anti-Christ was to coma, and now many
Anti-Christs have appeared, which proves to us that this is indeed the
last hour. -l John2.-18
This is what is meant by
Anti-Christ. You have been told that he was to come, and here he is, in
the world already.” I John4.3
The above verses are the
entire source of information about the Anti-Christ. All the thousands of
books and articles that have been written through the years about 666
and/or the Anti-Christ have been based on these few verses. Let us look
.at them ourselves and try and make some sense out of them.
First of all, let’s
see what 666 is all about.
According to the noted
theologian A. J. Ferris, during the first century AD. it was the custom
in certain religions for the worshippers to wear the “mark’ of their
god or goddess. It was simply a token bearing the numerical value of the
name of the deity.
It should be noted here
that numerals (1, 2,3,4,5,6, 7, 8, 9, 0) are relatively recent
inventions. 2000 years ago, when the New Testament was being written,
they did not have numerals. When they wanted to write down numbers, they
had to go \, \\, \\\,
\\\\, etc, or else
use letters to represent numbers.
For example, we could
make the letter A equal 1, B - 2, C - 3, D - 4, etc, Then the numerical
value.of the name Ada would be l+4+1=6.,
This is the way Roman
numerals work. The letter I equals one, V-5, X-l0, L-50, C-l00, D-500
and M-l000. Each language would use its.own alphabet as numerals in a
similar manner.
So we see that 666 or
616, is the numerical value of someone’s name. Since each language had
its own system of number/letter equivalents, we will have to discover in what
language the Anti-christ’s name is to be figured.
As it is generally
accepted that the New Testament was written in Greek, and that God is
called by the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet (alpha
and omega, Revelation 22.-)3), it
is reasonable that we should work with the Greek language and alphabet.
Now to examine the term
Anti-Christ.
The Greek ward Christ is
often used instead of the Hebrew word
Messiah. Both words
can be translated “the anointed one.”
According to the Bible,
when God chose a man to become king, he was anointed by the High Priest
(I Sam. 10: 1, I Sam 18: 1, 13).
The word messiah
specifically refers to a king that many Jews believed God was going
to send them. This king (or messiah, Daniel 9:26-26) was to be a
descendent of King David and was
to re-establish the great Jewish Empire that had been set up so the days
of King David and King
Solomon. Since the Messiah’s empire was divinely decreed, the Jews
called it The Kingdom
of God.
Several attempts were
made to re-establish the ancient Jewish Empire, but around 160 B.C. a
mortal blow was struck against any further hopes for a worldwide Jewish
empiree. At that time the Greco-Roman empire brought an end to
Jewish rule so Jerusalem and place one of their own on the thrown - the
thrown reserved for the Son of David - and the. Messiah!
Many Jews resented this
change and began to refer to the non-Jewish ruler of Palatine as the
false-messiah because he was reigning in place of the true messiah. They
called him the anti-messiah or, in Greek, the Anti-Christ.
The Roman Emperor who
supported the anti-Christ on the Jewish throne was known as t “the
Beast”.
Revelation 13:7 tells us
that no man might buy or sell unless he had the “mark’ of the beast
in the right hand or forehead In those days, one had to get royal
permission to engage in almost any form of commerce. And since the
official language was Latin (even though most everyone spoke Greek), to
deal with the government, you had to be able to write and speak Latin.
The “mark” then was having a knowledge of Latin (the mark in the
forehead) to be able to write in Latin (the mark in the right hand).
Thessalonians was
fulfilled in 41 A.D. when Caligula proclaimed himself to be a god and
sent his statue t6 Jerusalem to be erected in the Temple. This news so
enraged the Jews that war broke out between the elect of God - the Jews
- and the forces of the Beast - Rome. This war almost resulted in the
complete annihilation of the Jews. (Matthew 24-22)
Any competent historian
can find many other “proofs’ ‘of the Anti-christ being the Judean
puppet-kings Herod and others supported by the succession of Roman
emperors.
The point of all this is
that many still prefer to believe in a yet-to-come modem-day Antichrist,
even though history and the scriptures indicate he came and went 2000
years ago.
The reason many choose
to believe tradition rather than truth is because they have not been
exposed to the light of the New Age
Finally, many
Bible have footnotes saying the number translated from the original
Greek could be 616, experts say new photographic evidence of an ancient
fragment of Book of Revelation papyrus indicates the number is indeed
616, not 666.
Scholars
in England have been using modern technology to scour some 400,000 bits
of papyri which were originally discovered in 1895 at a dump outside the
ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus. Many of the sections have been
damaged and discolored, but an imaging process is shedding new light on
the sacred text, believed to have originally been penned by St. John,
one of Jesus' apostles.
"This
is a very nice piece to find," said Ellen Aitken, a professor of
early Christian history at McGill University. "Scholars have argued
for a long time over this, and it now seems that 616 was the original
number of the beast."
The
papyrus in the spotlight is believed to have been written toward the end
of the third century (290 to 300 AD)
"This
is very early confirmation of that number, earlier than any other text
we've found of that passage," Aitken said. "It's probably
about 100 years before any other version."
The
main researcher promoting the 616 information is David Parker, professor
of New Testament Textual Criticism and Paleography at the University of
Birmingham in England.
"This
is an example of gematria, where numbers are based on the numerical
values of letters in people's names," Parker said. "Early
Christians would use numbers to hide the identity of people who they
were attacking: 616 refers to the Emperor Caligula."
Many
commentators have gone with later copies of text which assign the number
666 to "the beast," believed by some to be the End-time world
power.
Some
have also linked 666 with Nero, the ancient Roman emperor known for
persecuting Christians.
Parker
points out the possibility of 616 was considered by the second century
church father Irenaeus, who rejected it.
Regarding
this new text, Parker said, "This adds weight to those who believe
that it is a reference to Caligula's attempt to desecrate the Temple in
Jerusalem, by having his statue erected there as part of the cult of
emperor worship.
"There
may be a reference to it in Mark [13:14], where he refers to the 'the
abomination of desolation.' But this was overshadowed by the
persecutions Nero. People believed that you could get from '666' to Nero
because in Greek he is the emperor Neron Caesar. And 666 is one number
less than the perfect 777. The text [showing 616] is quite legible to
the naked eye. It was published in 1999, but it has taken people time to
catch up."
Elijah
Dan, professor of philosophy and religion at the University of Toronto,
said the new number won't likely have an impact in the popularity of
666.
"Otherwise,
a lot of sermons would have to be changed and a lot of movies
rewritten," he said with a laugh.
